The quote's wrong, too. Should be 'THE LOVE OF money is the root of all evil" [caps added]. It's in an epistle attributed to St. Paul. Paul's not everybody's cup of tea, but he wasn't an airhead. His job - preaching, lots of risky travel - entailed overhead. If he'd shunned $, stayed put and didn't think big(ger), the religion likely would've gone pffft. So the idea is more like "don't worship 'stuff,' " and $ is ultimate 'stuff,' since it lets you get more stuff.
